Insect-inspired device-circuit-algorithm co-design


The artificial intelligence community, inspired by the tremendous progress made in neuroscience, has recently proposed powerful algorithms to enable effective real-time decision making based on a limited volume of noisy sensory data. However, implementing such algorithms in low-power devices in real time next to the sensors remains a challenge due to the growing power and memory requirements. Unlike digital systems, insects are not very good at performing precise calculations, but they excel at making extremely energy-efficient real time decisions by combining sensory data recorded in noisy environments. Therefore, taking further inspiration from the organizing principles of insect brains is a natural next step towards low power intelligent edge devices. If we look closely at the insect’s biology, we can identify a diversity of memory-like functions at play in their sensory and nervous system. These different functions closely resemble the ones performed by the different emerging memory technologies we are currently developing at Leti. We intend to use these novel technologies to mimic the biological mechanisms observed in insects and create high-performance energy-efficient silicon-based nanosystems.
